China proposed the strategy of innovation-driven development and stressed that scientific and technological innovation is a strategic pillar for boosting social productivity and comprehensive national strength and therefore must be placed at the heart of the country’s development. The China’s government put innovation at the top of the five development principles and identified innovation as the most important factor driving development. China made prominent steady progress in terms of technological readiness, goods market efficiency and higher education and training. Between innovation and productivity in unit is attracting much notice. There are substantial positive impacts of product innovation on productivity, but the impact of process innovation is more ambiguous which is attracting attention from academia and industry.

The macroeconomic environment promoted the interesting of researchers on understanding and analyzing the impact of innovation on firm performance, regional economic and industrial growth in China. Recently there are a large number of papers concerning innovation and productivity in terms of firm and region development, such as innovation-driven productivity growth, organization innovation et al. This conference aims to offer timely theoretical, empirical and methodological contributions on innovation and productivity growth, drawing from the evidence in different levels. Submitted articles will take into account the specificities of the Chinese context. It will provide much needed knowledge and facilitate the development of research agendas and policy analysis.

Aims and scope

Innovation is crucial for China's productivity future. The goal of this special issue conference is thus to encourage discussion that can contribute to the literature on innovation and productivity in China. For this conference we welcome theoretical, empirical and methodological contributions that can broadly enhance our understanding of innovation and productivity, drawing from the Chinese context.It is essential that papers consider what is unique and ‘Chinese’ about innovation. We also welcome papers in the broader area of innovation in the Chinese context or that facilitate the development of agendas for further research and policy analysis in China.

Submission Details

Selected conference papers presented at the conference will be invited for submission to Economic Modelling (SSCI:IF1.48). These papers will have the review process expedited in collaboration with the conference organizers, but the process will follow the journal review guidelines.
